Hugh Halter: Sacrilege: Finding Life in the Unorthodox Ways of Jesus (Shapevine)
Great read for those who want to be inspired to live the way Jesus lived. So if you're content with church as usual, Christianity as usual, and your life in general, then you can skip this book. If you'd like to shake your own life up a bit, live more consistently like Christ, and be a part of His Church, then grab two copies, one for you and one for a friend, and dive in! (*****)
John Burke: No Perfect People Allowed: Creating a Come-as-You-Are Culture in the Church
This book really influenced my heart to plant a church. We all know imperfect people, especially when we look in a mirror. And yet when people enter a church building the often expect others to expect perfection, and will join in the game by pretending perfection as well. This book inspires the body of Christ to dispense real grace to real people with real needs. I'm the at the front of the line. (***)
Edward T. Welch: When People Are Big and God Is Small: Overcoming Peer Pressure, Codependency, and the Fear of Man (Resources for Changing Lives)
If I was teaching a class on why people do what they do, this would be the text. This book covers that topic from a profoundly biblical perspective and gives the best solution on dealing with our desire for approval from others and our longing for acceptance. Many people are paralized by fear of rejection and this book gives a solid solution. (****)
Dallas Willard: The Spirit of the Disciplines
This book is shedding incredible light on the Disicplines explained by Foster. I wished I had read this one at least 2 decades earlier. It really gets to the heart of being like Christ. Going beyond externals and being like Him. Another must read for developing the life we all want to live. (****)
Richard Foster: Celebration of Discipline
Being a Disciple involves discipline. This book taught me the depth behind the simple acts of the Christian walk. It turned my routine into intimate, personal, communion with God. Thanks, Foster for writing this down! (****)
John Piper: Desiring God
I've read this book many times, taught small groups with it, used it in counseling and continue to learn how to yearn to delight and find my satisfaction in God. It's a must read for every disciple in every generation (*****)
Leonard Sweet: Jesus Manifesto: Restoring the Supremacy and Sovereignty of Jesus Christ
This one is on it's way and I'll be diving in shortly. Can't wait!
John Burke: Soul Revolution: How Imperfect People Become All God Intended
I just got this one at the Community Conference that I attended back at the end of '08. Haven't started it yet, but it's on my "to read" pile.
Alan Hirsch: The Forgotten Ways: Reactivating the Missional Church
I got this book after listening to Verge Conference. For me it helps to articulate my passion for the organic church and the building blocks that are a part of church planting movements. I do think his language is not the easiest to apply, but the concepts are great and I'm already influenced by what I understand. (****)
